The New Jersey Section of Palisades Interstate Park is located in Bergen County, with the Park Headquarters in Alpine. The parklands and historic sites are found in a 13-mile long, ½-mile wide stretch of the Hudson River shoreline. The cities of Alpine, Englewood Cliffs and Fort Lee are in the park area. There are 30 miles of hiking trails, two public boat ramps, four riverfront picnic areas, a scenic riverfront drive, a cliff-top drive with scenic overlooks and a nature sanctuary.
The historic sites include the Blackledge-Kearney House in Alpine and the Fort Lee Historic Park in Fort Lee. Building began on the Blackledge-Kearney House in 1802 with sections added in the 1840s and the early 1900s. Throughout its early years, the house served as a Hudson River homesteader's residence, a tavern, a police station for the park, and a park caretaker's residence; today it houses a museum. The Fort Lee Historic House is located atop the Palisades, offering stunning views of the Hudson River, Manhattan and the George Washington Bridge. The Visitor Center and Museum presents a short film on George Washington's retreat from the area in November 1776.
The Women's Federation Monument, in Alpine, is accessible by trail only. The Monument is a tribute to the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs who led the campaign to stop the destruction of the Palisades Cliffs by closing the quarry operations. Recreational activities in the park include boating, bicycling, fishing, crabbing, hiking, picnicking, and in winter, cross-country skiing.
Bergen County was formed in 1683 and was one of the four original New Jersey counties. It is one of the top five wealthiest counties in the country and consistently rates in the top ten healthiest places to live in the United States. The county has the lowest tax rate in New Jersey and, statewide, has the greatest percentage of jobs and businesses.
